Crowhurst Scout Group @ Menin Gate

12.11 - Ieper - Crowhurst Scouts at Menin Gate.JPG (473 KB)

It is unlikely that Father Michael has let our recent Flanders Fields trip pass anyone by but, as a cd of photos has just been distributed, I though I’d share this group photo here. And I can vouch the Scouts behaved impeccably throughout the Last Post Ceremony & in the hour leading-up.

December News

We had an international night at the start of October where we learnt a little about life in Australia. We made hats with corks hanging off them, impersonated Australian animals and learnt a little bit about Scouting there. Before half-term we had a night of games and fire-lighting down in Kiteye Wood and over the break some of the Cubs took part in a swimming gala.

On our first night back we made bunting as part of the creative challenge under the direction of Alice Webster and Frances Hamson. Each Cub had to design a triangle of fabric. There were some interesting drawings of their leaders!

Whilst preparing for Remembrance Sunday the Cubs watched a film about the Royal British Legion and made giant poppy posters to commemorate the fallen. These were all on display in St George’s porch, on the Sunday, when we attended the Remembrance Service and carried the Union Flag and Pack flag.

Finally after a year of doing the job of an assistant leader Baloo was formally invested by the District Commissioner at the Annual  General Meeting. We gave him a signed card and a book of Baden-Powell’s writings at the following Pack night.

News from the Cubs

Crowhurst Cubs and Scouts

The Crowhurst Summer Fayre seems ages ago now, but it would still be good to say a public thank you to those parents who made our Cub entry to the wheelie parade with its fairy story theme. With considerable ingenuity a wheelbarrow was transformed into grandmother’s bed from Little Red Riding Hood with its resident wolf. A party of woodcutters walked along side it. In the horticultural society tent we had our own class in which we submitted some of the knots and lashings the Cubs had made at summer camp.

The Magazine will have gone to press before either the Pack or proposed Troop will have had its first meeting. We know, however, that we will be welcoming three Beaver Scouts who have recently swum up and two totally new recruits. As well as some Cubs who have outgrown the Pack we also have three new recruits to Scouts. Perhaps most encouraging of all is the arrival of a new Cub leader with Robert Firth and we look forward to hearing his Jungle Book name.

Latest news from Cubs

Hemingfold Farm was a great place for our summer camp with its meadows, ponds and woods all being available for us to use.  The Cubs loved going fishing for carp, went foraging for berries in the woods and did a god job lashing together hazel sticks to make wash stands and a clothes line. We did all our cooking, in sixes, over open fires and as well as hearty breakfasts cooked chicken parcels with vegetables and new potatoes on the Saturday night.  As well as looking after ourselves we played a lot of games, which included rounders, building a bridge across the stream, damming up the water and several wide games.

Saturday night was our camp fire night with the songs and yells. Akela was sporting his new camp fire scarf with flashing lights for the occasion. We also said goodbye to Valerie Mighall who is stepping down as our treasurer and gave her a small presentation.

On the Sunday we had our Cubs’ Own (morning service) under the protective branches of a great cedar of Lebanon and before the final flag down presented our new Challenge Shield to Red Six.

Whilst they were away the Cubs definitely learn so much more. It was really noticeable by Sunday how they were lighting their breakfast fires without having to be told. Most of them, however, remain less keen on washing up!

None of this would be possible, of course, without the kindness of the owners of Hemingold in letting us camp there and the assistance of all the parent helpers. There was a constant need to cut up more wood, collect water, supervise the cooking, help with the games or fishing and to sort out the ‘thunderbox’.

We are also grateful to everyone who supported the car wash at Crowhurst Village Hall and who had a go on our treasure hunt map at Catsfield Fete.
